On the 22nd October, we’re going to see the first episodes of Class, a new Doctor Who spinoff set at Coal Hill School, featuring a cast of brand new characters and described as akin to Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the ‘Whoniverse’. Right now, lots of exciting details about Class are being released at New York Comic Con; first up, there’s the trailer, which you can watch below.

The main focus of the trailer above was the Doctor; Peter Capaldi will be making a guest appearance in the first episode of this eight-part series. Don’t expect him to stick around, though – as Patrick Ness said during the panel, Class is “about what happens to the people when the Doctor is done with his adventure.” This trailer also hints at what will presumably be one of the overarching ideas of the series – a rift in time, caused by the Doctor’s frequent comings and goings, which may well act in a similar capacity to Buffy’s Hellmouth. After all, Patrick Ness has promised “some really great creepy monsters […] that do unexpected things and play unexpected roles”, and they’ve got to come from somewhere!

A few interesting details were released about the characters, including their names; over the course of the next few months, we’re going to be getting to know Tanya (Vivian Oparah), Charlie (Greg Austin), April (Sophie Hopkins) and Ram (Fady Elsayed), as well as Mrs Quill (Katherine Kelly). Fady Elsayed commented that “Some people might find Ram a little bit cocky but he’s also sweet and caring”, while Sophie Hopkins said that her character April is “a good girl with the ability to be bad", who “puts others first”. Charlie, Greg Austin’s character, was said to be “a bit of a weird one”, who is “eyes wide open all the time”; Vivian Oparah revealed that her character Tanya is “three years younger than the others but she’s got the brain!”

Finally, we’ve also received pair of synopses for the first two episodes of Class:

Episode 1 – For Tonight We Might Die

It’s a new term at Coal Hill Academy, and students are preparing for their Autumn Prom. But when the school comes under attack from the monstrous Shadow Kin, four alienated students must form an unlikely alliance to defeat them.

Charlie, April, Ram and Tanya, assisted by their physics teacher Miss Quill, are now charged with a great responsibility by the mysterious alien known as ‘The Doctor’: to guard against the creatures of nightmare, who want nothing more than to find a way through to Earth and take it for their own.

And this incursion is only the beginning…

Episode 2 – The Coach With The Dragon Tattoo

Following the tragic events at the Prom, a devastated Ram isolates himself from the other three as he struggles with his new reality. Desperate to hold himself together on the football pitch, when he thinks he witnesses someone getting skinned alive he’s convinced he’s cracking up.

But when Tanya, Charlie and April are all confronted with the same thing: a horrific, monstrous, skin-peeling dragon, they know that they’re under attack. The gang must pull together to fight against the monster, and try to keep Coal Hill safe.

Ultimately, I’m really looking forward to this show – as I said back when it was first announced, there’s just so much potential to this premise, and I can’t wait to see where Class takes us.
