First Reactions To The BFG Are In From Cannes 2016

Steven Spielberg’s live-action adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic ‘The BFG’ has just screened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and so far the reaction has been hugely positive.

Director Spielberg and Mark Rylance (the actor who plays the big friendly giant) collaborate again, having worked on ‘Bridge of Spies’ together. They were in attendance for the Saturday (14 May) screening of the anticipated film.

And it appears the film has been warmly received, with early reviews praising the production.

The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw gave it a four-star write-up, calling it ”hugely charming” and describes Rylance’s casting as the BFG as crucial, saying he “absolutely makes this movie what it is”.

Variety describe it as “splendid” and offers high praise as “the sort of instant family classic “human beans” once relied upon Disney to deliver.” Critic Peter Debruge also compares the relationship between Sophie and the BFG to that of Elliot and E.T. in Spielberg’s classic ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’.

Games Radar say it’s “an adaptation to savour” and says the visuals are stunning to look at, as Spielberg conjures up a story adaptation with “genuine human warmth and vulnerability”.

And those in attendance at Cannes were eager to tweet their thoughts on how amazing Spielberg’s latest is.

So the consensus seems to be that Spielberg’s got another hit on his hands, with ‘The BFG’ looking like it could (quite literally) stand head and shoulders above the rest of this summer’s competing releases with its wide appeal and how lovingly the story is brought to life.
