Though she’s scored herself a handful of screen credits so far, the leading role in Warner Bros’ remake of ‘A Star Is Born’ is the one that could turn Lady Gaga from musician to ‘serious actress’.
And here’s the first look at Gaga, who will be credited under her real name Stefani Germanotta, taking those first steps along that well-trodden path.
She plays aspiring star Ally, who is assisted in her quest for fame by Bradley Cooper’s Jackson Maine, a movie star struggling with both a downward career spiral and alcoholism.
A passion project for Cooper, he has adapted the story from the 1954 movie – itself a remake – and will also direct the movie, his debut behind the camera.
Judy Garland and James Mason played the starlet and her mentor in the 1954 version, Garland grabbing herself an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
Meanwhile, the 1937 version starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in the leading roles, while 1976 also saw the movie remade by Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.
This new iteration is being called a ‘reimagining’ of the source material, so how it might differ from the other movies is so far unclear.
Cooper plays a fading country music singer, when he happens upon Gaga’s character, who soon shoots to stardom while Cooper’s career continues its decline.
Gaga has already appeared in small roles in movies like Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For’ and ‘Machete Kills’, and took a more substantial role in the last series of ‘American Horror Story’.
‘A Star Is Born’ is due for release on September 28, 2018.
