First dibs: Coolhaus — Animal-free ice cream from California loved by Hollywood celebs lands in Singapore

Ever tried ice creams that label themselves as being healthier, but they end up tasting lackluster and nothing like the actual thing? Wait till you’ve tried Coolhaus, a cult ice cream brand from California that landed on Singapore shores in August 2022— you’ll be amazed!

Coolhaus uses sustainable dairy protein from Perfect Day, which is animal-free, lactose-free, cholesterol-free, hormone and antibiotic-free. They’ve brought in a total of six indulgent flavours into Singapore, which are Peanut Butter ‘N Fudge, Mint Chocolate Chip, Molten Chocolate, Vanilla, Cookies ‘N Creme and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.

I had the chance to try out three of their flavours, and started things off with their Mint Chocolate Chip. The overall design of the tub had a quirky and artsy aesthetic to it, making it look fun and appealing. I’d usually associate the colour of mint ice cream to be green, like other brands in the market, thus I was a little surprised when Coolhaus’ version wasn’t.

I could taste the freshness from the mint leaves that were used in this concoction, and it paired really well with the bits of dark chocolate chips— they provided a crunchy texture to the creamy vanilla mint ice cream.

The Molten Chocolate would probably be one of my favourites— I’m an absolute chocoholic! The chocolate flavour was robust, yet light enough to prevent it from getting too jelak. I found myself trying to resist having more of it as it was pretty addictive. Although Coolhaus labels themselves as using sustainable animal-free milk protein, I couldn’t taste the difference between regular dairy ice cream and their animal-free dairy.

I ended my indulgent ice cream evening with Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Before scooping into it, I noticed that the appearance was similar to cookies and cream. As I scooped up bits of the luscious vanilla ice cream, lovely chunks of cookie dough were revealed together with bits of chocolate chips.

The flavour was the lightest of the three, and the cookie dough added a nice chewy texture which tied everything together nicely.
