First Dates Fred on how he spends his Saturdays... Playing football with his son and dining out

8am

I like it when Fruitcake [Fred’s nickname for his fiancée – he’s never revealed her real name] stays in bed, so I have time to do whatever I want. I make coffee using my Nespresso, with soy milk, and then cook scrambled egg and salmon, with sourdough (I get a lot of my bread from Ayres Bakery, in Nunhead). I make my eggs the way Albert [Henri Roux, the French restaurateur] taught me when I was working at Le Gavroche, with double cream and butter.

I do strength and conditioning exercises in my living room or in nearby Peckham Rye Park. Normally I would go to my local gym, McKenzie’s Boxing Fitness & Personal Boxing Club, and hit the bag.

11am

Last Saturday, I took my son Lucien to get an iPad at the Apple Store on Regent Street – it was his 11th birthday. I was excited to go shopping with him, but felt sad, as it was so empty – I worry about the impact on livelihoods. Lucien loves sushi, so we had sashimi at Gordon Ramsay’s Lucky Cat, and chatted to Gordon.

2pm

I play football with Lucien in the park. My daughter Andrea, who’s 16, is the British 10m platform diving champion and has been training from home for three hours every day doing somersaults, landing on a mattress, it’s been incredible. I’ve been working in lockdown, too, on Inside Monaco for BBC Two [Fred’s the show’s narrator], and have helped my local food bank on an initiative called Fill The Fridge.

5pm

I FaceTime my parents almost every day. They’re both 72 and live in Limoges, where I was brought up. My dad has cancer, so they’ve been very careful. I’m driving down to France soon, for the first time since lockdown.

I recently went to Le Gavroche with Fruitcake. We had a beautiful lamb with a mint sauce and eclair with strawberries. Le Gavroche was the last restaurant booking I cancelled before the lockdown, so I really wanted to go back. But I do enjoy cooking, too [Fred is a trained chef]. Over the past few months, I’ve improved my skills at making curry goat, but I like to do it with fresh tagliatelle and grated Parmesan. Delicious.

We go to bed at 12pm. Fruitcake always has fresh mint tea. Normally I fall asleep quickly, I’m good like that.

5 Live Boxing. I started boxing when I was about 30. My parents were very against it – they were both nurses and think it’s bad for your brain.

My most treasured possession is…

My last Father’s Day card – the kids made it. My son drew a picture of me – a man with a beard. I don’t look like Brad Pitt, so he drew me as I am.
