We admit it: Running makes us have to poop. Like, a lot. Though we’ve been dealing with this…er, unpleasant issue for ages, we’ve always just used it as an excuse to stop running (because running sucks, like, a lot) instead of looking into why. But, thanks to our friends at Self, we just learned the reason behind our sudden need to run right off the treadmill and to the bathroom, and we’re seriously so curious RN.

Lisa Ganjhu, D.O., a gastroenterologist, told Self,

“It happens to different people for different reasons, but most common sense is that it’s because you’re moving, and that up and down motion seems to stimulate the colon a bit.”

Plus, we drink loads of water when we run (because water is good for you, right?!), and this can, well, ~loosen things up~ in a way that isn’t always pleasant.

“People who are simply drinking more water are more likely to have softer stools.”

And if you’re one of those brave souls (bless you and your athleticism, we are in awe!) who actually runs marathons and the like, you may want to take extra precaution so your training isn’t destroyed by a need to escape the public eye ASAP.

“Everyone is a little bit different as far as how their body reacts to different things, so usually my advice if if you’re running a race, don’t do anything new the day of. During practice runs, try out different foods,” Ganjhu told Self.

So there you have it, folks. While there’s no easy fix for the pooping dilemma, there is one bonus to finally knowing what causes this issue: you’re not alone! So don’t look down in shame as you pass your neighbors (again) during a run on your way to the bathroom just minutes after heading outside, or when you hit the treadmill next to the cutie just to run right off in search of the locker room. Just give ’em a wink, because we’re all on the same boat, here.
