Filmmaker Gil Portes has passed away

The "Moonlight Over Baler" director passed away at the age of 71

26 May - It was revealed that Filipino filmmaker Gil Portes has recently passed away.

As reported on ABS-CBN, the news was first announced by his niece, Ming Tinana, who wrote, "It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Direk Gil Merluza Portes. As we thank your prayers and expression of sympathy, we also request for privacy for our family at our time of grief."

Portes' family will be arriving in Manila soon to prepare for the funeral, which will be confirmed later on. However, no details have been revealed as to the cause of death, except that he was dead on arrival at the East Avenue Medical Centre in Quezon City.

Portes has directed multiple award-winning movies, including "Saranggola", and "Small Voices". His recent works include the 2016 "Ang Hapis at Himangsik ni Hermano Puli" and 2017's "Moonlight Over Baler".

He was 71.
