Fifty Shades Darker VR experience coming, director says it “expanded my brain”

It seems ‘Fifty Shades’ fans are actually going to get the chance to step into Christian Grey’s infamous Red Room – in a virtual sense, at least.

James Foley, who has taken over from ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ director Sam Taylor-Johnson to helm the upcoming ‘Fifty Shades Darker’ (as well as trilogy closer ‘Fifty Shades Freed’), has revealed that virtual reality technology is being utilised in the marketing materials for the adaptation of EL James’ best-selling novel.

Foley broke the news at a public event on VR (quotes via Deadline), revealing “after we finished shooting for the day, the actors would stay over and VR people would re-create a facsimile of the scene.”

The 62-year old American director (whose previous credits include ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ and Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’) was very struck by the results.

“My own personal instinct is that cinema is going to move to VR because it’s an extension of the visual language… For myself, watching the material they generated expanded my brain.”

It’s tempting to make a dirty joke about the organs we might expect a ‘Fifty Shades’ VR experience to expand… but probably best not to go there.

Dragging our minds back out of the gutter, Foley seems confident there’s a big future for VR which will cross over heavily with the movies, remarking the traditional approach “needs to be reinvented… the train is leaving the station, I think, and travelling really fast.”

‘Fifty Shades Darker’ opens in cinemas on 10 February 2017. Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will reprise the lead roles.

Follow-up ‘Fifty Shades Freed,’ shot back-to-back with the second film, arrives one year later on 9 February 2018.
