17 Jan – The 31st Malaysia Film Festival, or Filem Festival Malaysia ke-31 (FFM 31), will see the reintroduction of four categories that this year's 67 local movies will compete in.

The categories are Best Documentary, Best Short Film, Best Animated Film, and Best Digital Film.

The news was revealed by Rozita Waty Ridzuan, who is part of FFM's jury selection committee, at the FFM 31 press conference that was held yesterday at Pawagam Mini P. Ramlee, FINAS.

"32 categories will be in competition this year, including Best Movie, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and, for the first time ever, Best Makeup," she said.

The three animated films that made the nation proud in 2019, "Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal", "BoBoiBoy Movie2" and "Ejen Ali The Movie", will all be competing for Best Animated Film along with 2018's "Wheely".

Apart from animated films, other big movies of 2019 that will be in competition are "Sangkar", "Pusaka", "Ennaval", "Kali Muni Tharisanam", "Walk with Me" and more.

Aside from that, awards from non-competition categories will also be handed out, which include Behind-the-Scenes Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Special Jury Award and Box Office Film Award.

Also present at the FFM31 press conference were FINAS Chairman Datuk Hans Isaac FINAS CEO Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nadzri.

With the theme 'Inspirasi Sinemaku: Tanpa Sempadan' (My Cinema Inspiration: Without Borders), the FFM 31 awards ceremony will be held at Encore Melaka this 18 April.
