10 Sep – Video games fans are scratching their heads in confusion after finding out that the mainland mobile game, Original Legend, has decided to appoint filmmaker Feng Xiaogang as its official spokesperson.
As reported on Epoch Times, in a new video ad released on Douyin, the director could be heard talking about how he would go to an internet cafe with his friends in 2001 and play the game, and how happy he was that they are now able to continue doing so on mobile phones.
One netizen who saw the ad commented, "Feng Xiaogang was born in 1958 and was in his 40s in 2001. Why was he going to internet cafes with his buddies at that age?"
Others lamented on the state of the film industry, saying that it must have been hard for filmmakers and studios everywhere if an award-winning filmmaker is subjected to promoting mobile games.
On the other hand, insiders claimed that Feng might have been struggling with money after facing several issues - which started after the media found out about lead actress Fan Bingbing's tax evasion tactics after discovering that she had signed two different contracts for Feng's film, "Cell Phone 2".
In the same year, Feng had a fall out with Huayi Brothers when the company's stock fell due to the situation. To make matters worse, his 2019 film, "Only Cloud Knows" also did not make a good return at the box office.
