Women have been obsessing over their lady-bits for a long time, whether it’s trying the latest DIY tightening treatment, googling designer vaginas or obsessing over the smell, the vagina – and how to improve it – has been a hot topic for many years. But now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public about a therapy that has been growing in popularity in the UK.

Vaginal rejuvenation is a term that covers all devices and procedures that change or alter the vagina. Claiming to treat conditions connected to menopause, incontinence and sexual function, the promises are unfounded. The FDA says health claims behind these therapies are unproven and can pose serious risks, such as burns, scarring and recurring pain.

FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb took to Twitter to discuss the FDA’s warning.

The FDA began investigating vaginal rejuvenation devices after receiving reports of adverse affects of the therapy.

While these laser and energy-based therapies have been approved for destroying pre-cancerous cells in tissue, they have not had the appropriate testing to determine whether they are effective in rejuvenating tissue. According to the BBC, Member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons Dr. Paul Banwell shares the FDA’s concerns around the therapy.

There has been an exponential rise in the interest in women’s health and sexual well-being and whilst this should be encouraged, it is vital that any educational and treatment initiatives are provided in a sensitive manner free of any misleading or marketing hyperbole,” he said.

When it comes to maintaining vaginal health, it is recommended you always seek the help of a professional if you have concerns.

One gynaecologist wants to remind women everywhere that despite what society would have you believe, every vagina is different – much like humans as a race.

If women are concerned about the appearance or feel of their vagina, they should speak to a healthcare professional,” said Dr. Vanessa Mackay from the UK’s Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

“It is important to remember, however, that every woman’s vagina is different. Labia are as individual as women themselves and vary in appearance and colour.”
