FBI Investigating Democratic National Committee Email Hack

The FBI has officially launched an investigation into the hacking of Democratic National Committee emails, the agency confirmed on Monday.

“The FBI is investigating a cyber intrusion involving the DNC and are working to determine the nature and scope of the matter,” the bureau said in a statement. “A compromise of this nature is something we take very seriously, and the FBI will continue to investigate and hold accountable those who pose a threat in cyberspace.”

DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned on Sunday shortly following Wikileaks’ publication of approximately 20,000 emails, some of which suggested that the Democratic party tried to derail Bernie Sanders’ campaign in favor of Hillary Clinton during the primary season.

On the eve of the Democratic National Convention, which kicks off Monday, Clinton’s campaign accused Russia of the hack, saying it stole DNC emails to benefit Republican rival Donald Trump.

Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook, said on Sunday that “experts are telling us that Russian state actors broke into the DNC, stole these emails [and are] releasing these emails for the purpose of helping Donald Trump.”

Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday “what we have is a kind of bromance going on between [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and Trump.”

Trump mocked the suggestion, tweeting, “The new joke in town is that Russia leaked the disastrous DNC emails, which should never have been written (stupid), because Putin likes me.”
