Fantastic Four Producer/Writer Optimistic For Sequel

Simon Kinberg, the writer and producer for the ill-fated ‘Fantastic Four’ reboot that came out earlier this year, has revealed he’s hopeful of a sequel and is ready to start work on it.

The Josh Trank-directed superhero movie received mostly scathing reviews upon release, and went on to flop at the box office, taking a measly $161 million.

Speaking recently to MTV, Kinberg was surprisingly upbeat about a follow-up. “I’m really focused on the next one,” he said. He also claimed that, due to his commitments on ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, he hadn’t really had time to digest and reflect much upon the experience he had making ‘Fantastic Four’.

But he wasn’t about to hide what was so publicly known to be a troublesome shoot, to put it mildly.

“I was obviously disappointed,” Kinberg shared. “I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know.”

Kinberg does a good job of sitting on the fence. He doesn’t take responsibility for its disastrous cinema release, nor does he admit that, for whatever reasons, it just didn’t work.

Yet there remains a defiance that, underneath the carnage that was the public release of ‘Fantastic Four’, therein lies a great movie.

“We made that movie in the sweltering heat of summer in Baton Rouge and I was there every day of photography. You’re waking up every morning being like, I want to go make a great movie. It was an opportunity to do that. I do believe there is a great ’Fantastic Four’ movie that we’ve made with that cast. So I’m gonna figure out what that is.”

It’s not clear quite what he means by this, but sounds like he’s nevertheless determined to see the good side of the doomed production.

In truth, it’s unlikely that we will see ‘Fantastic Four 2′, based purely on its inability to make any money at the box office, but Kinberg would like to see more, but it’s a huge ask.

“We’re figuring out what that movie would be,” he expressed. “I’d like that to happen.”

Even if he had a script ready to go, the cast - including Kate Mara, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell - would need some convincing to return, with Mara having already spoken out about the likelihood of more Sue Storm.

You have to admire Kinberg’s enthusiasm for a sequel, even if it’s a tad unrealistic to think it’ll be greenlit. That said, with Marvel breathing down Fox’s neck for the rights to the ‘Fantastic Four’, they might go ahead with it just to make use of the license they own.
