Fantastic Fest Sets ‘Arrival’ As Opening-Night Film
Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival will be the opening-night film at the genre centric Fantastic Fest in Austin, the festival said today in unveiling its second wave of programming. The sci-fi pic, which stars Amy Adams, will premiere at the Venice Film Festival then head to Toronto. Also on Fantastic Fest’s slate is the world premiere of the newly restored cult classic The Zodiac Killer and the U.S. premiere of The Handmaiden with Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) in attendance.
Other titles include Ana Lily Amirpour’s dystopian love story The Bad Batch, a follow-up from her A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night; Maren Ade’s black comedy Toni Erdmann; and Julia Ducournau’s coming-of-age pic Raw, her directorial debut. Other films include Paul Verhoeven’s dark comedic thriller Elle and Paul Schrader’s crime thriller Dog Eat Dog which just landed a distribution deal.
Paramount has set a November 11 wide release for Arrival, starring Adams and Jeremy Renner. This was the film that took the 2014 Cannes market by storm when the studio won a wild rights auction to the pic for a fest-record $20 million, earning it North American and China distribution rights.
Fantastic Fest, which runs September 22-29 in Austin, already has set a screening of Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children ahead of the pic’s September 30 U.S. theatrical release via Fox.
