Fans are still waiting for Jay Chou’s new album that he’s been teasing since 2017
It has been five years since Mandopop star Jay Chou released an album. His last album was Jay Chou’s Bedtime Stories. Still, fans are eagerly waiting for his new album, which he has been delaying since 2017.
In a video compiled by a Chinese fan on Weibo, Chou was seen making hilarious empty promises over the years. In 2017, he said his new album would be ready by the end of the year. In 2018, he said during a concert that the new album would be released the following January. But he later denied that in another event, claiming it was a rumour.
In 2019, the star promised and confirmed on separate occasions that he would drop the album soon. However, in a media interview, he said he had only created five songs at that time, and would not be able to keep up with the schedule, which made fans wonder what he had been up to.
During an event, Chou, who shares his travel photos and art collections on his Instagram, said that it looked like he had been having fun, when he was actually going around looking for inspirations. But a later scene showed him going back on his words, “It’s not that I don’t want to release a new album. It’s just that I have been having fun.”
The year is 2021 and once again, Chou cooked up a new reason for not releasing an album: “It’s actually very easy for me to write a song. It boils down to whether I want to do it or not.”
In response to his empty promises over the years, Chinese fans joked that Chou was unable to compose both songs and lies. Quoting the lyrics of his song A Step Back, one fan said that he “made a promise, but it became empty with time.”
Another fan also came up with funny titles for the five new songs he had written: I’m Writing; Don’t Wait Too Long, Will Release This Year; I’m Looking Forward To It Too; This Is A Rumour; I’ve Been Having Fun.
Regardless, there is nothing much fans can do, except to continue waiting for the new album that never seems to come.
