Fan Bingbing feels helpless with lawsuit against movie

29 Mar - While she sympathises with 60-year-old Pan Jinlian of Guangdong Province, actress Fan Bingbing believed that having a similar name with a famous fictional character is no grounds for a case.

As reported on Epoch Times, previously, it was reported that a woman from Guangdong has decided to sue the whole production team of Feng Xiaogang's award-winning movie, "I Am Not Madame Bovary" for causing her distress.

According to the woman, the movie, which has the original Chinese title of "I Am Not Pan Jinlian", has severely damaged her good name and the name of the Pan family, for claiming that the name Pan Jinlian is synonymous with improper women.

Both Feng and the lead actress Fan Bingbing didn't show up at the hearing held at the Beijing Chaoyang Dictrict People's Court on 21 March.

When asked about Ms. Pan's case against them, Fan responded through her manager that she feels helpless about the whole thing.

"There are many instances that people have the same name with historical figures. But those are two different things," said her manager.

Fan also reportedly said that the Chinese movie's [Chinese] title is "I am Not Pan Jinlian", and encapsulate the whole journey of her character in proving she is not an improper woman like the aforementioned popular 17th century fictional character. Therefore, she does not agree with a court mediation.

The case will have its conclusion on 9 April.
