Fabrizio Romano confirms Man Utd ‘advancing’ with deal for winger Ten Hag is ‘convinced’ about
Manchester United are making good progress with a new contract for Facundo Pellistri, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Pellistri has been a Man Utd player since October 2020, when he arrived from Penarol in his native Uruguay. However, he still only has nine senior appearances for the club to his name. There have been loan spells at Alaves and appearances in the youth ranks for Man Utd.
This season, Erik ten Hag has started to give Pellistri some opportunities. Indeed, the current Man Utd manager has been responsible for all nine of the winger’s first-team outings to date.
But Pellistri is yet to start a Premier League match, which would suggest he hasn’t earned Ten Hag’s full trust just yet.
Regardless, Man Utd still have big plans for Pellistri in the future. His current contract is due to last until 2025, but the Red Devils might be about to tie him down for longer.
Now, transfer expert Romano has revealed via his Twitter account that Man Utd are ‘advancing in talks to extend Facundo Pellistri’s contract until June 2028’.
The ‘plan [is] very clear’ for the 21-year-old, according to the reporter, who added more information in a video on his YouTube channel.

Romano explained: “What’s important to say is that the situation has really changed in the last few months.
“First of all, Erik ten Hag is really happy with Facundo Pellistri. Erik ten Hag is convinced that Facundo Pellistri is a very talented guy, that he has very good skills.
“Of course, there is Alejandro Garnacho at this moment who is a top, top talent. But Pellistri is doing very well too in training.
“And this is why when in January some clubs approached Manchester United – many clubs, including Bologna in Italy, Flamengo in Brazil, Spanish clubs also wanted Pellistri on loan – Erik ten Hag said no, he has to stay here, we can use Pellistri, we need Pellistri.
“And so he didn’t want the player to go and maybe not play in some of these clubs. He wanted Pellistri to stay and carry on to work under his coaching staff.
Facundo Pellistri could leave Man Utd on loan
“So this was the idea and I can tell you in terms of news that Manchester United are in advanced talks to extend the contract of Facundo Pellistri until June 2028.
“So they want to give him a new long-term deal and then discuss in the summer a potential loan move for Pellistri, because this could be an opportunity for him to play.
“But the priority is to extend the contract. Manchester United trust Pellistri for the future and this is showing how sometimes it can need time before you see the results of what you did with some young players.
“But for Pellistri, for sure, those €10m are not going to be lost for Manchester United. So that was a smart signing and also the expectation of people close to Pellistri is for sure to see Pellistri as one of the stars of the World Cup for 2026 with Uruguay.
“So the future looks to be bright for Facu Pellistri.”
Given that Man Utd might loan Pellistri out next season, it makes sense for them to extend his contract beforehand. If not, he could impress elsewhere and then only have a year remaining on his deal at the time of his return, putting United in a vulnerable position.
Instead, they could tie down the South American starlet until he will be 26 years of age, taking him towards the prime of his career. He has a lot of developing to do until then, though.
