Everton are reportedly close to securing a deal for Udinese striker Beto, as Sean Dyche looks to bring in some much-needed attacking reinforcements.
The Toffees scored just 34 goals in the Premier League last season, something they need to improve if they want to avoid a third consecutive relegation battle.
They have lost their two opening fixtures against Fulham and Aston Villa, scoring no goals and conceding five. They are set to face Wolves on Saturday, who were the only team to score less than them last term.
Meanwhile, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is unavailable for selection due to another injury, while Neal Maupay has scored just once in 31 appearances for Everton.
As a result, signing a new striker is Dyche’s priority and Beto seems to be top of his shortlist.
The Merseyside club were keen on the Udinese star in January. After a deal for Southampton’s Che Adams has stalled, they have now reignited their interest.
Reports suggest Everton put a €25m (£21.4m) package on the table for Beto on Thursday, which was rejected.
It now seems, however, that Everton have made an improved offer and are edging towards an agreement with Udinese.
Beto has ‘accepted’ Everton move
According to reputed transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Everton have increased their offer for Beto, with talks set to continue with Udinese over the weekend.
On Twitter, Romano wrote: “Everton and Udinese will discuss again of Beto deal today. €30m proposal on the table, Udinese want bit more to get it done.
“The structure of the deal and add-ons could be crucial to make it happen. Beto has already accepted the move.”
Beto scored 10 goals in 33 Serie A appearances for Udinese last season.
Standing at 6ft4, the Portuguese striker is an imposing figure on the pitch and could work well as a target man, something that Dyche utilised effectively during his time with Burnley.
While discussions over the structure of the deal are still ongoing, Everton agreeing personal terms with Beto is certainly a step in the right direction.
Interestingly, Romano also claims that Udinese are close to signing a replacement for the Portuguese striker. Kaio Jorge is apparently set to join the Italian club on a season-long loan until the end of the campaign from Juventus.
Everything points towards Beto joining Everton at the moment. Toffees’ supporters have seen similar situations lead to nothing in the past, though, so they will hope that a fee and structure is agreed as soon as possible.
