The First Footage From the 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' Reboot Will Make You Ugly Cry
Move over, Trading Spaces! There’s a new reboot in town, and it’s arriving in a seriously big bus.
In the best news for home décor enthusiasts everywhere, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is returning to TV in February 2020. The reboot is making its comeback on HGTV, though it originally aired on ABC.
The HGTV website writes that the network will produce 10 episodes, each with a custom reno for a "very deserving family." They will be spotlighting "local heroes and those who give back to their communities despite personal challenges." A perfect example is the firefighter and father of two who will appear in the first episode.

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is such an iconic show,” said Kathleen Finch, chief lifestyle brands officer for Discovery, according to Variety. “It’s an emotional story centered around a house. There is real drama, and real stakes around a home being rebuilt.”
In addition to promising "real drama" and heartwarming stories, HGTV has gathered an all-star lineup of celebrities to help with the renovations. From home design experts to award-winning country singers, the diverse group of guest stars is sure to add an extra special element to the show.

Who’s hosting?
HGTV announced in June 2019 that Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson will take on the hosting duties. The post was formerly held by Ty Pennington, carpenter and home improvement heartthrob extraordinaire. As for why they opted for Jesse over Ty, it sounds like Jesse is a better fit for to the network's fresh vision.

"Jesse’s participation as host of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is one of the ways that HGTV will put its own creative lens on the series,"said Jane Latman, president of HGTV. "We’ll make some variations to creative aspects of the show, but it will always deliver the great storytelling that made it one of the most iconic and successful properties in television."

HGTV released a nearly three-minute sneak peek at the highly anticipated reboot, with footage that proves Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is going to be even more inspirational, transformative, and heart-warming the second time around. Seriously—you won't be able to make it through this clip without crying.
The trailer also gives viewers a first look at Jesse's hosting abilities (he's gonna be great!) and a glimpse at some other familiar faces who will appear on the show.
Wait a second—is Ty Pennington coming back?
YES. While Ty won't be hosting the reboot, he will be making a guest appearance to do what he does best: serve as a hands-on renovator who actively participates in the builds.

Will there be other famous people on the show?
You bet! HGTV has an enlisted a "a cadre of special guest stars" to support the renovation efforts on Extreme Makeover and a new celebrity will appear in every episode to work alongside the volunteers and design team. The network has already confirmed that some of the biggest names in home renovation—including Tarek El Moussa (Flip or Flop), Jasmine Roth (Hidden Potential), and Tamara Day (Bargain Mansions)—will appear on the show.
However, reno experts aren't the only familiar faces you'll see helping out Jesse and the crew. Country singer LeAnn Rimes, a 2009 recipient of the Academy of Country Music Humanitarian Award, is part of the star-studded lineup that will help execute the life-changing home transformations.
"I was an avid fan of the original Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, so when I heard about the reboot on HGTV, I just had to have a hand in it," LeAnn said in a press release. "It’s an honor to help renovate a dream home for a deserving family, and I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work. Let’s move that bus, y’all!"
Where will they renovate houses?
The first renovation out of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition reboot took place in Clovis, California with the help of De Young Properties.
"We had such a great experience here with De Young and everyone in Clovis and greater Fresno area. We thought no better place to come back to," executive producer and showrunner Brady Connell told ABC 30. Construction on the house began at the end of July and volunteers and crew members worked for 96 hours to complete the project.
The well-deserving homeowner—CAL FIRE Captain Nick Reeder—had tears in his eyes as Jesse revealed the new four-bedroom home to him and his twin daughters. Nick's wife, Amanda, passed away in April of 2018 shortly after giving birth to his little girls.
"The Reeder family are so deserving," said Ryan De Young, president of De Young Properties. "I get choked up every time I talk about them."
Other renovations throughout the 10-episode series will take place in various other locations around the country, including California, Utah, and more.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will return on on Sunday, February 16 at 9 p.m. ET—but if you’re thinking, “That is SO FAR AWAY,” don’t worry, HGTV has a master plan. They have received the rights to air 100 episodes from the original series, which ran from 2003-2012, so that you can binge watch as necessary. Or, you can save yourself the trouble and buy it now.
