Britney Spears went from Mickey Mouse Club member to record-breaking singer with hits like “I’m a Slave 4 U” and “Toxic.”

Britney Jean Spears was born Dec. 2, 1981 in Mississippi. After getting her first professional role in the Off-Broadway musical “Ruthless!” she finally was cast as a member of the Mickey Mouse club alongside Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Ryan Gosling in 1992.

1998: Spears records her first album and goes on a promotional tour, performing as an opening act for NSYNC. “Baby One More Time” was released in 1999 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The album became the biggest selling album ever by a teenage artist.

1999-2002: Spears dated fellow Mickey Mouse costar Justin Timberlake. Remember the matching denim outfits?

“I just don’t think we were normal; there was nothing normal about our existence,” he told Vanity Fair in 2011.

May 2000: Her second studio album, “Oops!… I Did It Again” was released. It debuted at number one in the US, selling 1.3 million copies, breaking a record for the highest debut sales by any solo artist. The same year, she went on her first tour and wrote a book, and had her first MTV VMA performance, which critics cited as the beginning of her provocative performances.

2001: Her third studio album, titled “Britney” debuts at number one. The album’s first single was “I’m a Slave 4 U.” Her famous 2001 VMA performance featured a caged tiger and a python draped over her shoulders.

2002: Spears had her first feature film acting role in “Crossroads,” costarring Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning. The film grossed $61 million worldwide in three months.

2003: Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears had their controversial MTV performance, performing “Like a Virgin.” Halfway through the performance, Madonna appeared, kissing both singers.

November 2003: Spears released her fourth studio album, “In the Zone.” The album featured songs like “Me Against the Music” with Madonna, “Toxic” and “Outrageous.”

January 2004: Spears married childhood friend Jason Alexander in Las Vegas. However, the marriage was annulled 55 hours later.

September 2004: Spears married dancer Kevin Federline. Shortly after, she took a career break to start her family. In September 2005, her first son was born.

February 2006: Pictures of Spears driving with her son on her lap instead of in a car seat surfaced. She divorced from Federline in 2007.

January 2007: Spears’ aunt died from ovarian cancer and the singer stayed at a drug rehab center for less than a day the following month. That’s when she shaved her head in Tarzana and admitted herself to other treatment facilities.

October 2007: Spears released her fifth studio album, “Blackout.”

December 2008: Her sixth album, “Circus,” was released. Spears won a Guinness World record for becoming the youngest female artist to have five albums debut at number one.

March 2011: Her seventh album, “Femme Fatale,” debuted.

May 2012: The singer was hired as a judge for the second season of the U.S. version of “X Factor.” Her reported salary was $15 million, meaning she became the highest-paid judge on a singing competition show in TV history.

September 2013: Spears announced her two-year residency at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, titled “Britney: Piece of Me.”

March 2015: Iggy Azalea and Spears collaborated on a song titled “Pretty Girls.”

2016: Spears confirmed she would be releasing her ninth studio album titled “Glory.” On July 14, she released her single “Make Me…” On August 16, she announced she would perform at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. Her last performance at the award show was in 2007, when she performed “Gimme More.”

August 2016: Spears took part in James Corden‘s “Carpool Karaoke,” performing “Toxic” and “Oops!… I Did It Again.”
