Oil cleansing has long been buzzed about in the beauty industry as a gentle alternative for removing your makeup and cleaning your skin. And yet, many are still put off by it because of the negative connotations that oil and skin still have. It’s true that certain kinds of oils are highly comedogenic and can disrupt the balance of your skin, but there are plenty of oils that actually help reduce the overproduction of oil that your skin naturally creates and it helps restore balance to your skin by keeping it deeply moisturized and healthy.

The trick to oil cleansing, and using oils on your face in general, is finding the right blend that works for you.

There’s no easy way to hold this many oils, friends.

Here are a few oils I love.

Your skin will, of course, have different reactions to different kinds of oils since some are heavier than others or have a natural fragrance that irritates your skin, to name a few issues. The part most people get stuck on is the fact that there is a fair amount of troubleshooting that has to go on to determine the right kind of oil for your skin. This can sound totally daunting, but fear not! It is worth it in the end to find an oil that works beautifully for you.

Using an oil cleansing method keeps your skin perfectly moisturized and balanced, gently removes makeup and dirt, and gives you a beautiful, natural glow.

There are several ways in which you can go about using an oil cleanser as well. You can buy individual oils and use them on their own. You can purchase individual oils and create blends at home that are unique to your needs. Or, you can purchase oil cleansers that are ready to go and already blended.

A few of the most popular oils for oil cleansing are jojoba oil, camellia seed oil, sweet almond oil, calendula, grapeseed oil, and rosehip seed oil. Calendula, camellia seed, and sweet almond oil are wonderful for sensitive skin. Jojoba and grapeseed are great for dry skin, and rosehip seed, jojoba, and grapeseed are great for acne prone skin.

You can easily look up variations on recipes to create your own oil blends that will be beneficial to your skin type. You may find that a certain blend works beautifully for your skin, or you may prefer using individual oils instead.

To oil cleanse your face, take a few drops of your oil or oil blend of choice, warm it in your hands by rubbing them together, and then apply liberally over your face and neck. Don’t be afraid of gently working it into your lashes and eyelids, oils are magic at dissolving eye makeup and mascara without a trace! Part of the fun of oil cleansing is taking a moment to yourself and treating your skin to a gentle massage. Work that oil in and let it hang out for a minute.

When you’re ready to remove it, take a warm, damp washcloth and place it over your face. Very gently wipe the oil away, leaving a slight film over your skin. You should feel clean, but not squeaky clean where it dries out your skin. This way, you have the goodness of the oils sinking into your skin long after you’ve washed it off.

It’s a super easy way to pamper yourself while washing your face, which you need to do anyways! Might as well make it slightly luxurious, don’t you think? If feels French, old world, and elegant. All our favorite things!
