Everyone Laughed at Me for Using a Diaper Rash Ointment as Lip Balm—Until They Tried It
I’m no stranger to winter. I grew up in Missouri, went to school in Iowa, and now bravely battle Snowpocalypses and Polar Vortexes in New York. Over the years, I had found plenty of ways to bundle up (pro tip: blanket scarves are your friends), but I struggled with how to keep my skin, namely my chapped lips, under control.
I tried it all: Salves, balms, scrubs. My bathroom was littered with products I tested for a month and gave up on after they didn’t cure my cracks. As the situation got worse, I started to imagine everyone was staring at my mouth in horror. So, I did the only thing I could think of to keep the nightmares at bay: I called Mom.
My mother is notorious-and yes, based on how much she loves to be right, I do mean notorious-for always knowing what to do. In this case, she suggested A+D Ointment, the weird tube of diaper rash cream she always keeps in her bedside drawer. I wrinkled my nose. That is not what I had in mind.
Her maternal instincts quickly picked up on my skepticism, so she sealed the conversation with this order suggestion: “You don’t have to try it, I’m just saying you should.” Ding, ding, ding! Round one to Mom.
Of course, you know by now that she was right. I bought some off of Amazon and watched as it worked wonders. Now, I always apply it at night, and wake up with my lips feeling like butta. But I’ve endured my fair share of skeptics myself.
When I brought my trusty tube on a trip to Chicago over New Year's, my friends teased me endlessly about my diaper ointment, so I insisted they try it. Wouldn’t you know, by the time the weekend was over, everyone was asking to borrow some. I also convinced my roommate of its powers following his reaction to seeing A+D in my room. Now he carries a travel size in his pocket. Vengeance!
If you need more convincing, know that it helps for so many other everyday annoyances, too. Got a dry flake on your face? A little dab is all you need. Dealing with a scratch or scrape? This will help. Or, obviously, use it for its intended purpose to help clear up your little one’s diaper rash. It’s pretty much a one-stop shop for any minor skin problems.
