The film will focus on Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey in an adaptation of the “Dark Phoenix saga,” a celebrated and influential X-Men comics storyline written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Dave Cocktum and John Byrne. Set up with an eight-issue arc from 1976-77 and later concluded with a 10-issue arc in 1980, the story sees Jean Grey acquire fantastic powers that ultimately corrupt her, turning her into a cosmic-level threat.

The storyline was previously adapted very loosely in “X-Men: The Last Stand,” where Grey was portrayed by Famke Jansen.

Kinberg, who co-wrote “X-Men: The Last Stand” - the franchise’s first attempt at the Dark Phoenix saga — was reported several months ago to be in talks to not only write the “Apocalypse” sequel but to direct the film as well.

Kinberg is producing with Hutch Parker and Lauren Shuler Donner. Kinberg is also a producer on “Deadpool 2,” as well “X-Men: The New Mutants.”

The film has a release date of Friday, Nov. 2, 2018.
