Erik Matti denies leaving "Darna" project

11 Jun – Director Erik Matti has denied a new rumour saying that he is leaving the "Darna" project that he has worked on for years.

The filmmaker recently shared on social media a snapshot of a news article about the rumours, which stated that he has decided to quit after having issues with lead actress Liza Soberano's hectic schedule.

"Just had a few people text me about this. This is not true. Fake news. I've been with the "Darna" project for 5 years now and I am still here along with my team," wrote Matti.

The director stated that he is not one to quit a project once he accepted it, no matter how easy or difficult it is.

"I owe it to everyone who committed to the project to always see it through and be the last person to waver and have doubts about the project we embark on. And for "Darna", no matter the years we put in, our commitment to see it through stays. I am a finisher," he added.

It is noted that Matti has been loyal to the big budget project since day one, when it was Angel Locsin who was cast to play the female superhero.

Locsin first left the project in early 2016 following a back problem, and was slated to return following her surgery and physiotherapy. However, she decided to withdraw from the project for good in March last year after realising that the physical demands of the movie could aggravate her injury.

Liza Soberano was announced as her replacement in June the same year.
