Actor Elliot Page has thanked fans for their 'love and support', after coming out as transgender.
He shared a first selfie on Instagram since the announcement earlier this month.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you,” read the caption. “Your love and support has been the greatest gift.
“Stay safe. Be there for each other. If you are able, support @transanta and @translifeline.”
The star of movies like Juno, Inception and Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, who is married to the dancer and choreographer Emma Portner, revealed the news in a social media post.
“Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they and my name is Elliot,” he wrote.
“I feel lucky to be writing this. To have arrived at this place in my life. My joy is real, but it is also fragile. The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the 'jokes', and of the violence.
“I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer. And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive. To all trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you and I will do everything to change this world for the better.”
Following the announcement, Portner went on to address questions about her own gender identity.
“My gender identity, pronouns, and sexuality are private and not up for debate,” she wrote. “Would love for the energy in discussion over my identity to shift into addressing the climate crisis or sharing resources to support LGBTQIA2+ resiliency instead.”
Following Page's announcement, Netflix said it was 'so proud' of the actor, calling him a 'superhero'.
