Edge Of Tomorrow Director Wanted For Gambit

It looks as though ‘Gambit’ may have finally found its director… as Doug Liman is currently being pursued to helm the ‘X-Men’ spin-off.

According to Deadline, the 50-year-old American filmmaker is being courted to take over from Rupert Wyatt on the upcoming ‘Gambit’ solo movie.

“Recent Hollywood chatter has Doug Liman on an inside track to direct Channing Tatum in Gambit,” they reveal. “[But] there’s also talk that Liman and Tom Cruise might do a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow.”

Of course, Rupert Wyatt had been lined up to helm the ‘Gambit’ movie since its initial announcement… but recently dropped out of the project, reportedly due to clashes with the studio over the movie’s creative direction.

Since then, it seems the search has been on to find his replacement, and Jeff Sneider at The Wrap confirms that Liman is indeed wanted to take the helm.

“True that Channing Tatum has been courting Doug Liman to direct GAMBIT,” he said via Twitter. “We’ll see if he goes for it though…”

And that’s the million dollar question – will Doug Liman take the job?

I can’t help thinking that he’d make an excellent choice. After all, his work on ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ with Tom Cruise was simply breath-taking, and even his earlier work on the likes ‘The Bourne Identity’ shows a competent filmmaker with a knack for telling a good story.

It seems that ‘Gambit’ is quickly becoming a passion project for Channing Tatum, so perhaps it’s encouraging that the man himself is trying to secure this director.

But whether Doug Liman signs on the dotted line is another matter entirely.

‘Gambit’ stars Channing Tatum as the eponymous, card-slinging mutant and will be joined by Léa Seydoux in a currently unknown role. ‘Gambit’ is based on a script by Josh Zetumer with Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, Channing Tatum and Reid Carolin to produce.

‘Gambit’ heads to cinemas on 7 October 2016.
