It’s not a secret that we’re totally excited for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, the film looks pretty darn magical.

However, it seems that Eddie Redmayne has earlier ties to Harry Potter than we initially thought and our minds are blown.

While on the promo trail for Fantastic Beasts (WHICH HITS THEATERS IN LESS THAN A MONTH OMG), Eddie revealed that he had actually wanted to appear in Harry Potter before. While we know that the new film is a prequel of sorts to HP, it seems that Eddie actually wanted the role of LORD VOLDEMORT!

Speaking to Empire magazine in their new Fantastic Beasts edition, Eddie revealed that he previously was pretty keen on the role of He Who Must Not Be Named.

“I actually auditioned to play Tom Riddle while I was at university,” he told the magazine. “‘I properly failed and didn’t get a callback.”

Oh dear…

It seems that Eddie is referring to the appearance of a teen Tom Riddle during Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, who was ultimately played by Christian Coulson.

Riddle wasn’t the only Potter character that Eddie was drawn to, however.

Continuing, he said that he also wanted to be a part of everyone’s favorite Wizarding family: The Weasleys.

“Over the years, I always hoped I might be cast as a member of the Weasley family,” he revealed. “I’m colour blind, but I’ve always been told there’s a tinge of red to my hair – but unfortunately not.”

While a bunch of Eddie’s friends, such as Domhnall Gleeson and a certain Robert Pattinson, got their first start on Harry Potter, it wasn’t meant to be for Mr Redmayne. However, that doesn’t meant that he’s not feeling the pressure now he’s a part of the Wizarding World.

“We were all fans and we grew up watching these films,” he said at the Fantastic Beasts fan event recently. “For me, getting to go and see a Potter film every couple of years was like diving into that warm and cosy place that made you feel happy about the world.”

Same, tbh.

While we’ve yet to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, from the trailers alone it looks like Eddie Redmayne was made for the role of the slightly unaware character of Newt Scamander. And what’s more, there are only 21 days until we actually get to see Fantastic Beasts! Too. Exciting!
