  • Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade opened up about how their children inspire them for ABC’s Time 100 special.

  • Gabrielle said it’s “beautiful to watch truly free children,” while Dwyane said he’s inspired by their “moments of bravery.”

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are among Time’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2020, and they gave an interview explaining what inspires them most: their children.

“Freedom exists in so many different forms, but we are so blessed to be in a household where we have free children. We have a daughter that is almost 2, that the world has seen is bound to nothing but whatever is in her heart and on her soul at the moment. And it’s beautiful to watch truly free children,” Gabrielle said during ABC’s Time 100 special. “We have another daughter who is 13, who has freedom to be exactly who she is, who she was born to be, to be her most authentic self. She doesn’t ask permission to exist. That is wildly inspiring.”

Dwyane added, “We’re inspired by our kids. The way they look at us, the way they look to us for leadership and guidance, for their moments of bravery.”

As John Legend notes, Dwyane and Gabrielle’s support for their daughter Zaya, who is transgender, has “set a powerful example for parents and for society of how to be good allies to young people who are figuring out who they are.”

“Every kid is going to be different in some way or another,” John wrote in his essay for Time about Dwyane. “Every kid is going to have their own individuality and their own interests and their own identity. He and Gabrielle don’t love Zaya despite who she is. They love Zaya and they celebrate who she is and they embrace her. He’s modeling how parents can champion their kids and fight for them and help them become the best adult that they can be. I think that’s really beautiful.”
