DVR Ratings: Designated Survivor Sees Best Gain, Empire Tops Premiere Week
In the second installment of our three-part look at Fall TV Premiere Week’s biggest DVR playback gainers, the superlatives go to ABC’s accidental POTUS and Fox’s sharp Cookie.

Live+3 DVR playback data is in for Premiere Week’s Wednesday and Thursday programs (airing Sept. 21 and 22), and Designated Survivor now lays claim to the largest total demo gain (previously held by NBC’s This Is Us), adding 1.5 rating points to its original tally, resulting in a 3.7. That rise also marks the biggest percentage gain (68) of any Wednesday program. (In total audience, Dez added 5.3 million viewers, the biggest Live+3 bump for any drama launch since ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder circa September 2014.)
Empire‘s Season 3 premiere, meanwhile, has emerged as Premiere Week’s top-rated program, rising 31 percent to a 5.5 rating, which bests The Big Bang Theory‘s 5.4. Also of note, the creatively resurgent hip-hop drama has posted at least a 5.0 in Live+3 for each of its 31 episodes to date. (In total audience, Empire grew 39 percent, delivering 15.1 million viewers with DVR playback factored in.)

Turning to Thursday, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away With Murder each added 1.1 rating points via Live+3 playback, landing at 3.6 and 2.5, respectively. Murder also enjoyed the night’s largest percentage bump (79), followed closely by NBC’s The Blacklist (which rose 77 percent, to a 2.3 rating).
