From Kate to Diana, we chart how soon after marriage royal couples welcomed children

Since Harry and Meghan’s wedding in May, fans have wondering when we might hear the pitter patter of tiny feet, particularly as the couple have made no secret of their desire to start a family.

While many thought a baby could be imminent, others predicted an announcement wouldn’t come until after the couple had completed their royal tour to Australia and New Zealand. But this morning, as the couple landed in Sydney, the news of their pregnancy broke.

News of the pregnancy comes just five months after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex tied the knot at a lavish ceremony at Windsor Castle, with the baby due next spring.

But how long after their own big days did other royal couples give birth?

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge: 27 months

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wed at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011 and 20 months later on 3 December 2012 St James’s Palace announced that the Kate was pregnant and being treated in hospital for severe morning sickness, known as hyperemesis gravidarum.

Prince George was born on 22 July 2013 in the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s hospital some 27 months after his parents tied the knot.

He has since been joined by Princess Charlotte who was born 2 May 2015 and Prince Louis, who arrived on 23 April this year.

Zara and Mike Tindall: 30 months

Prince Harry’s cousin Zara and Mike Tindall were married on Saturday 30 July 2011. Before their marriage, Tindall revealed they were keen to have a family, but when the time was right in their careers. “I wouldn’t say we’ll wait, we’ll try and find a window,” he said at the launch of his new charity Rugby For Heroes in May 2012.

In July 2013, Buckingham Palace announced that the couple were expecting their first child and their daughter, Mia Grace Tindall, was born in January 2014.

The couple announced they were expecting a second child in 2016, but Zara sadly suffered a miscarriage.

Happily, Zara confirmed she was expecting another baby in January 2018 and Lena Elizabeth was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire, on 18 June.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana: 11 months

Harry’s parents Princess Diana and Prince Charles tied the knot in a huge royal wedding in July 1981, when Princess Diana was just 20.

Just one year after their wedding, Princess Diana gave birth to her and Charles’ first son, Prince William, at St. Mary’s hospital after announcing her pregnancy in November.

In September 1983 the Palace announced Charles and Diana were expecting their second child, but a week later Diana sadly suffered a miscarriage.

The couple quickly fell pregnant again and on 15th September 1984, 23-year-old Diana gave birth to her second child Prince Harry.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson: 24 months

Harry’s aunt and uncle Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, followed a similar marriage followed by two children timeline. On 23 July 1986, the couple married in a grand royal wedding held at Westminster Abbey in London.

Just over two years later, on 8 August 1988, Sarah and Andrew welcomed their first daughter, Princess Beatrice in London.

Two years later, they welcomed Princess Eugenie on 23 March 1990.

The Queen and Prince Philip: 11 months

The Queen and Prince Philip married in Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947. At just 22, and less than three years after her wedding, the Queen gave birth to her first son Prince Charles in 1948.

He was followed by Princess Anne in 1950, Prince Andrew in 1960 and Prince Edward in 1964.
