Is drinking red wine good for your health?

Eating and drinking in moderation is a good practice for our health.

This goes the same for enjoying red wine over dinner or Friday drinks with friends. According to Mayo Clinic, red wine contains antioxidants called polyphenols that help protect the lining of blood vessels in your heart. A polyphenol named resveratrol is one chemical we should sit up and take notice of.

Resveratrol is found in the skin of grapes used to make wine. Red wine is made by fermenting grapes together with grape skins longer than white wine; therefore, red wine contains a higher percentage of resveratrol.

According to a study, with moderate wine consumption, resveratrol helps increase the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol plasma levels, decrease platelet aggregation, and restore endothelial function.

While resveratrol has also gained attention for its anti-ageing properties, it's important to highlight that while experts have shared its benefits, there's still not a lot of data to confirm its effectiveness.

That's plenty of good benefits to toast to!

Bordeaux is considered as one of the oldest wine regions in France, known for both its Left Bank, which produces Cabernet Sauvignon-based blends and its Right Bank, which produces Merlot-based blends.

From this region, you may like this highly-rated Grand Cru Saint-Emilion red wine that is easy to drink. You will experience all its fresh notes, as well as fruity and herbal aromas such as plums, vanilla, sage and oregano.

Think earthy, fruity aromas when it comes to this wine.

The Château Haut Breton Larigaudière, composed mostly of cabernet sauvignon, sees around 18 months in a mix of old and new French oak, adding a touch of vanilla behind the blueberry, cherry, plum and earthiness.

Rioja has strict regulations on wines classified by the region, and require the wine to remain a certain duration in the barrel and then in the bottle. This allows a wine producer to classify based on these restrictions as Joven (none to limited oak contact), Crianza (intermediate oak and bottle age) and Reserva (extended oak/bottle ageing).

If you like the vibrant cherries, high altitude coolness and a touch of cola - you’ll love this. The tiny tannins complement the driving acid and subtle earthiness to make a remarkable drop.

The prep work for this wine is interesting: it spent no less than 20 months in French and American oak barrels, plus over three years in the cellar to let all its powerful fruit and decadent oak flavour all meld together.

As for its texture, think liquid black chocolate cake melted with dark chocolate with heady spice flavours oozing from dark cherry, blackcurrant leaf and roasted coconut. This classic cabernet can be on the fuller side of medium-bodied, so be prepared for a hint of surprise.
