Dr. Jill Biden began Inauguration day beside her President-elect husband in a turquoise tweed coat with velvet lapels paired with a matching dress and face mask by New York-based designer Markarian. The pair attended a service at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle with Congressional leaders.

The ensemble continues a jewel-toned theme from the First Lady—while highlighting her commitment to supporting young, American designers. Last night she wore a purple coat tied with a velvet ribbon and matching gloves paired with a printed face mask by Mexican born, New York–based designer Jonathan Cohen to a COVID-19 memorial service at the Lincoln Memorial.

"It is an incredible honor to dress Dr. Biden today. I am so humbled to be even a small part of American history," Markarian founder and creative director Alexandra O'Neill tells BAZAAR exclusively of dressing Dr. Biden for her first appearance as First Lady of the United States.

The ensemble consists of a tapered dress with a chiffon bodice and scalloped skirt. "The neckline is hand-embellished with Swarovski pearls and crystals in a delicate floral pattern. The same Swarovski crystals adorn the coat and dress, subtly reflecting the light," according to the brand. As for the choice of marine blue, it was chosen "to signify trust, confidence, and stability." Last night's violet look, a blend of red and blue, was said to signify unity, a focal point of the President-elect's mission in office.

Much like Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who chose a look by Pyer Moss for yesterday's memorial service and is wearing CFDA Fashion Fund winner Christopher John Rogers today, Dr. Biden reinforces her intention to support small businesses, US designers, and emerging talent in the fashion industry. The brand shared that Biden's coat and dress were "carefully crafted by a small team in the heart of New York City’s Garment Center and hand-finished by O’Neill in her West Village studio."
