DPM urges FINAS to increase funding for animation films

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wants to see local animations reach international viewers.

2 Nov – Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi encouraged the government to give support to the local animation film industry as it has a high potential to break through the regional and international market.

On that note, Ahmad Zahid has requested for the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS) to continue assisting in the production of animation films by channelling more funds.

"We understand that not much funds are provided for it now, but we hope that in the future it can be increased as animation films seem to have a bright future."

"Last year, the export value of local animation was RM101 million, while the sales value was RM127 million," said the DPM during the gala premiere of the new local animation film, "Upin Ipin Jeng Jeng Jeng" at eCurve last night.

Taking "Upin Ipin" as an example, Ahmad Zahid said that the animation series by Les' Copaque is very well received even on an international level as it has managed to air on the Disney channel.

He also added that the collaboration between Les' Copaque Production and KRU Studios is a great effort to revitalise the local animation industry.

At the same time, he also wishes that local animation films in the future will be able to penetrate the global market by the year 2050, in line with National Transformation 2050 (N50) as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak recently.

He believes that the objective is possible through the support of the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia, as well as government departments and agencies related to the film industry.

The prestigious gala premiere was also attended by Ahmad Zahid's family, Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh and Deputy Minister of Tourism and Culture, Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.

Directed by Erma Fatima and Hajah Ainon Ariff, the live-action-animated film, features Puteri Balqis, Awie, Sara Ali, Gambit, Remy Ishak and more.

The film is set to hit cinemas nationwide on 24 November 2016.
