Donnie Yen doesn't want to be the "token Chinese guy"

3 Dec - Donnie Yen, of all people, understands the trend of Hollywood casting Chinese actors to boost its ticket sales in China, which is why he was hesitant about starring in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" when it was offered to him previously.

As reported on Variety, the actor, who is playing a character named Chirrut Imwe in the upcoming movie, stated that he did ask director Gareth Edwards about his involvement in the project – whether Edwards wanted him just because he's a Chinese actor who is good in martial arts, or that he wanted Donnie specifically for the role.

"[Edwards] told me that he's studied my films and I had the persona he wanted, that he had the perfect role for me. The focus isn't on my martial arts ability but my ability as an actor. But there are still scenes to satisfy the martial arts fans," he said.

Donnie also admitted that he was also concerned about taking the role since it would mean being away for five months from his children.

"But my kids said, 'Are you crazy? It's "Star Wars". You have to go'," said Donnie with a laugh.

However, the actor declined to share more information about his character in the drama, except that Chirrut Imwe is connected with the Force.
