It looks as though Mr Potato Head hasn’t recorded his lines.

Don Rickles, who passed away Thursday at the age of 90, was perhaps best known as Mr Potato Head in the ‘Toy Story’ movies, and had starred in each of them since the original ‘Toy Story’ back in 1993.

But now it looks as though Mr Potato Head’s role could be up in the air, as it transpires that Don Rickles had yet to record his lines for the upcoming sequel before his untimely death.

“Rickles was set to voice Mr. Potato Head in the upcoming fourth instalment of the Pixar series,” explained The Hollywood Reporter, “which is set to be co-directed by Lasseter and Josh Cooley for a 2019 release.”

“Rickles, though, had not yet recorded new material for Toy Story 4,” they revealed. “Pixar has been doing rewrites on the film, and Rickles had not yet been called in to record his voice tracks for Mr. Potato Head’s role in the fourth film.”

But where does this leave Mr Potato Head?

He may be used to losing his mouth, but it’s unlikely he’ll lose his voice…

“The plot for the film and how big of a role Mr. Potato Head plays in it are still unknown,” they added. “But it is possible that Rickles could still be included in Toy Story 4, using previously recorded material from the prior films.”

Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time Hollywood has taken that approach.

Following the death of Paul Walker back in 2013, the ‘Furious 7’ production team decided to complete the movie using digital versions of Walker on screen… using existing, pre-recorded audio to meticulously construct the actor’s lines.

And it’s thought that ‘Toy Story 4’ could take this approach.

Still, it all depends on how large a role Mr Potato Head has in the movie. But it’s encouraging to know that Rickles could still provide the voice of the much-loved character. After all, it would be a real shame to recast the iconic voice role.

But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.
