Benedict Cumberbatch is backing the all-female Marvel movie that's slowly but surely gathering speed at the comic book movie studio.

The Brit star, who plays Doctor Stephen Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has chimed in with a number of stars calling for the project to take flight.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, he said: “Yeah, bring it. Why not?

“There’s space for that definitely. We’re seeing the rise of the female superhero and why not? It’d be great.”

Both Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) have said that they're pushing for the project to happen.

Larson said that she's spoken to Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige 'passionately' about it.

“I will say that a lot of the female cast members from Marvel walked up to Kevin and we were like, ‘We are in this together, we want to do this,'” she told Variety.

“What that means, I have no idea. You know, I’m not in charge of the future of Marvel, but it is something that we’re really passionate about and we love and I feel like if enough people out in the world talk about how much they want it, maybe it’ll happen.”

Johansson, meanwhile, said: “That group of actresses is so incredibly powerful and when they come together, it’s explosive and unstoppable. So yes, I’m pushing for that. I think audiences want it and I’m definitely one of them.”

Johansson is currently making her spin-off Black Widow movie, set after the events of Captain America: Civil War.

It's due out in May, 2020.

Over the summer, the long-awaited Doctor Strange sequel was announced too, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, once again to be helmed by Scott Derrickson, and due out in May 2021.
