Doctor Strange almost had a different villain

‘Doctor Strange’ could have been very different…

During an interview with Empire Magazine, director Scott Derrickson revealed that ‘Doctor Strange’ almost faced a very different villain.

“Kevin [Feige] made a very cogent case,” he explained. “The trouble with starting with Nightmare is getting across the idea of the Dream Dimension as another dimension. The movie was challenging enough.”

But who is Nightmare?

The controller of the Nightmare Realm and Dream Dimension, Nightmare has encountered Doctor Strange on several occasions… but is nowhere near as powerful (or as prevalent) as Dormammu.

Of course, ‘Doctor Strange’ initially faces The Ancient One’s former protégé, Kaecilius… who turns out to be in league with the extra-dimensional entity known as Dormammu. The villainous entity is a little different in the comic books, with far more demonic leanings.

But it seems Dormammu simply made the most sense.

“It’s already an exposition-heavy movie… Dormammu made the most sense,” said Derrickson. “And he is the most present villain in the comics.”

Obviously, Dormammu will be well known to ‘Doctor Strange’ fans. He’s been one of the Sorcerer Supreme’s main villains for a long, long time… and so perhaps it was inevitable that he would make it to the big screen.

Will Nightmare appear in future movies? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

But perhaps he would make an interesting partner for Mordo…

‘Doctor Strange’ opened in cinemas on 25 October 2016.
