Distributor to reevaluate the release of Magellan animated film

14 Nov – After much backlash from netizens, the Philippines' distributor of the Spanish animated feature "Elcano and Magellan: The First Voyage Around the World" has decided to reevaluate the film.

As reported on Inquirer, CrystalSky Multimedia released its official statement, saying that it has heard the public's sentiment on the film.

"After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to reevaluate the movie. We are in the process of inviting historians, members of the academy and film experts to a film preview," the statement read.

The distributor added that they will base their next steps and actions based on these esteemed experts' comments and recommendations.

The issue sparked last week, when netizens took to social media to express outrage over the poster of the said animated film, which described the two explorers as the "good guys" while allegedly depicting Lapu-Lapu - a figure that many Filipinos consider a national hero - as a villain.

One netizen tweeted, "Please do not, under any circumstances, support the Elcano and Magellan movie. It portrays colonisers in a good light, like they're the heroes when Magellan brought suffering to the native Filipinos."
