The Walt Disney Company announced today that it is pledging $5 million to non-profit organizations focusing on advancing social justice. It is starting with a $2 million donation to the NAACP.

In a statement, the company said that this monetary pledge is a part of their "ongoing commitment to support organizations that advance social justice," including the NAACP.

“The killing of George Floyd has forced our nation to once again confront the long history of injustice that black people in America have suffered, and it is critical that we stand together, speak out and do everything in our power to ensure that acts of racism and violence are never tolerated,” said CEO of The Walt Disney Company Bob Chapek: “This $5 million pledge will continue to support the efforts of nonprofit organizations such as the NAACP that have worked tirelessly to ensure equality and justice.”

Disney also said that it offers the opportunity to further donations to such organizations through its Disney Employee Matching Gifts program, where it will match contributions made by employees to eligible groups. Additionally, the company aired a series of programming on its TV stations Tuesday night, including an ABC News special about the recent protests in the U.S. and the re-airing of two powerful episodes of black-ish.

This contribution comes as many brands and companies are making statements in support of Black Lives Matter and pledging support for equity for Black Americans. These statements have gone over a variety of ways, with some missing the mark for seeming too hollow or performative, while others, like Ben & Jerry's impressive statement, have garnered praise.
