Despite the coronavirus pandemic ravaging Disney’s 2020 release slate, the studio is looking forward to returning to business as usual in 2021.

Disney Animation Studios – the animation stable that brought us Frozen II, Moana, and Big Hero 6 – has today shared the first trailer for Raya and the Last Dragon, a new blockbuster animation coming to cinemas in March next year.

Produced by Osnat Shurer (Moana) and Peter Del Vecho (Frozen), the film is directed by Don Hall (Big Hero 6) and Carlos López Estrada (Blindspotting). The new fantasy epic features the voices Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s Kelly Marie Tran as Raya and The Farewell’s Awkwafina as Sisu, the last dragon.

It’s Disney Animation Studios’ first movie inspired by Southeast Asia, and Tran is the first Southeast Asian actress to lead a film from the company.

Talking about her character earlier this year, Tran told EW: “She is someone who is technically a princess but I think that what's really cool about this project, about this character, specifically is that everyone's trying to flip the narrative on what it means to be a princess.

“Raya is totally a warrior. When she was a kid, she was excited to get her sword. And she grows up to be a really badass, gritty warrior and can really take care of herself.”

Disney delayed a number of its biggest 2020 releases including Black Widow and The Eternals to 2021, while The One and Only Ivan, Artemis Fowl, Mulan, and Soul were all realigned as Disney+ releases.

Synopsis: Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well.
