Disney And Universal Dominate The 2015 Box Office

Unless you’ve been living in space this year you’ll be aware of the massive movie hits that’ve hit cinemas over the summer.

Notably, ‘Jurassic World’ and ‘’Age of Ultron’ demolished most of the competition, meaning big paydays for both Disney and Universal.

Disney’s summer kicked off in predictable fashion with ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ netting $1.4 billion back in May. With ‘Avengers Assemble’ proving hugely popular in 2012, it wasn’t a surprise that the sequel amassed a similar fortune.

‘Ant-Man’ was perhaps the surprise hit (if you can call it that), as it scooped just over $360 million. Considering many predicted a flop for the largely unknown Marvel character, it made enough to justify its existence.

‘Inside Out’ not only saw Pixar return to blistering form, but was a smash at the box office, with almost $700 million (and counting). Fans had prayed we’d see the animation studio return to the glory days, and they did not disappoint.

And let’s not forget that earlier in the year we saw ‘Big Hero 6′ ($658 million) and a live-action version of ‘Cinderella’ ($542 million) do great business.

Take November’s ‘The Good Dinosaur’ and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ into consideration, and 2015 will likely turn out to be one of, if not the most successful in the company’s history.

Universal Appeal

Similarly, Universal had a heckuva time with ‘Jurassic World’ stomping to an astonishing $1.6 billion, and it’s still doing well in cinemas and will continue to do so for weeks to come. In fact, it’s done so brilliantly that a sequel has already been green lit and will be released in cinemas in June of 2018, although director Colin Trevorrow won’t be returning to helm.

‘Despicable Me’ animated spin-off ‘Minions’ was, as many predicted, a big hit amongst the franchise faithful, with just shy of $1 billion to its name.

It would perhaps be a disservice to overlook the high octane success of ‘Furious 7′, the seventh movie in the franchise that eased its way to just over $1.5 billion in April (in part due to sentiment over the tragic death of its star Paul Walker).

‘Straight Outta Compton’ is also performing admirably, which is just heading to cinemas in the UK, with other hits such as ‘Pitch Perfect 2′ and ‘Trainwreck’ doing good numbers.
