Australian startup LIFX, which specializes in connected lighting solutions, has developed a bulb capable of killing most of the bacteria on the surfaces it illuminates. This bulb, set to be available by the end of the year, promises to annihilate up to 99.99% of certain forms of bacteria by being lit all night long. And it is set to last some 20 years.
LIFX Clean is being presented as the world's first intelligent antibacterial light, capable of being switched from a conventional lighting mode to a disinfectant mode at any time. Once in that mode, it emits HEV light for a germicidal effect. Note that this is not UV light, but a specific light with a wavelength of 405 nanometers, which is safe for humans.
According to the manufacturer, this bulb is capable of neutralizing about 70% of bacteria on a lit surface within just two hours and up to 99.99% in one night. The closer it is to the surface to be disinfected, the more effective it is.
Controlled from a dedicated mobile application, the bulb can also be voice-controlled since it is compatible with the major home assistants. The potential uses are numerous, such as illuminating the kitchen worktop, but also the inside of cupboards, to disinfect clothes or various accessories.
The company claims it has a lifespan of 20 years and is priced at US$70.
It should be noted that this technique of eliminating bacteria with light has already been tested in some hospitals in China.
