'Detective Pikachu' topples 'Tomb Raider's 18-year reign as the highest-grossing video game movie
Congratulations are in order for Detective Pikachu.
The movie has finally out-gunned the 2001 adaptation of Tomb Raider to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation movie ever.
Angelina Jolie starred as the athletic archeologist Lara Croft, with the movie, helmed by British director Simon West, making $131 million (£103 million) in the US.
Pikachu has now made $139 million in the US (£109 million), which totted up with its worldwide haul comes to an impressive $412 million (Tomb Raider made $247 million in all worldwide, just over $357 million in today's money).
The fantasy-mystery-comedy sounded like deeply strange proposition indeed when it was announced that Ryan Reynolds, better known for his x-rated quips as Deadpool, was to voice the diminutive Pokemon.

But a few decent reviews later, not to mention an avid Pokemon fanbase, and things appear to have turned out alright, with Forbes calling it the 'best video game movie ever'.
It's also the best reviewed video game ever, according to Metacritic.
And it's been so well received that a sequel is already in the offing, with Oren Uziel, of 22 Jump Street and the forthcoming Sonic The Hedgehog movie, signed up to write the script.
A doff of the deerstalker is in order.
