This Destination Was Just Named the Best Honeymoon Spot in North America — and No, It's Not Maui or Miami
Hint: This wine country idyll is famed for its bold reds and beautiful scenery.
As newlyweds, choosing where to go for your first getaway can feel like a big decision. There are classic options like Paris or, for adventurous couples, expeditions to places like the Galápagos Islands. However, one of the best honeymoon spots is right here in the U.S. — California's Napa Valley was just named North America's leading honeymoon destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards.
This vino-centric corner of Northern California (located a little over 60 miles north of San Francisco) beat Maui and Miami Beach for the title — both places have cinched multiyear winning streaks in the past. But with so much to see and savor in Napa Valley, it’s easy to understand why couples love it so much.
Napa is practically synonymous with cabernet sauvignon and you can sample glasses of it (as well as other varietals) at the area's many superb wineries including Alpha Omega Winery, Frog's Leap Winery, and Tres Sabores. For a truly unique experience, board the Napa Valley Wine Train, which runs year-round and takes passengers on a "first class" journey involving multicourse meals and numerous winery stops.
But even teetotalers will find plenty of things to do in Napa. In addition to regional parks like Skyline Wilderness and Westwood Hills, there are a few state parks in the area including Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, which has over 10 miles of trails.
In addition to wine, Napa Valley is also well known for its culinary scene, which is famous for its farm-to-table fare. There are Michelin-starred heavy hitters such as The French Laundry and Press Restaurant as well as more casual eateries like Farmstead — all perfect options for date night.
If the promise of robust reds, pastoral Northern California scenery, and meals made with local ingredients isn't enough to entice you, Napa Valley also has an impressive selection of award-winning hotels. Many of those properties have top-notch, on-site spas specializing in couples massages, "vino therapy" treatments, and facials that can help recapture that walk-down-the-aisle glow.
