Derek Tsang wants Zhou Dongyu to win Best Actress again

9 Dec – Derek Tsang really hopes that Zhou Dongyu would win Best Actress again through their latest collaboration, "Better Days".

As reported on Mingpao, the filmmaker, who appeared on the red carpet of the International Film Festival & Awards Macao (IFFAM) alongside the actress, said that Zhou worked really hard this time around and is already considered the best actress in his eyes.

"But whether or not she should be nominated will be determined by the jury. Winning an award really depends on luck. I don't want to think too much about it," he said.

Asked why he decided to work with Zhou again following the success of "Soul Mate" in 2016, the director said that the two became friends after working together in the previous film. It is noted that the actress won Best Actress through her role in the movie at the 23rd Hong Kong Film Critics Society Award, 2nd Golden Screen Awards, and the 53rd Golden Horse Awards - the latter a joint win with co-star Sandra Ma.

On the other hand, when asked about the comments about another "Soul Mate" star Sandra Ma having a decline in her performance since doing the movie, Derek said that he has yet to see the actress' new movie.

"I don't believe that her acting could decline. She loves acting, works very hard, and has always been very demanding of herself," he added.

"Better Days" stars Zhou as a bullied teenage girl who forms unlikely friendship with a mysterious young man who protects her from her assailants. The film co-stars Jackson Yee and Fang Yin and has already been dubbed one of the best Chinese films of 2019.
