Denise Ho takes a jab at celebs for "selective activism"
12 Aug – Denise Ho recently took a jab at celebrities over their "selective activism" following the viral black and white photo challenge.
As reported on Epoch Times, the singer-turned-activist recently shared an article from the Facebook page RWBB, which slammed female stars and celebrities for only giving their voice to what convenience them, adding that they should just focus on showing off their branded luxury items instead of talking about women empowerment.
The article read, "You pray fervently for the koalas during the hill fires in Australia, but we don't see any of you standing up to say that it affects the ecology (and you don't ask for political opinions, just mourn for the dead sparrow). Women's equality seems to be a very hollow concept to you, you carefully select a fashionable photo of yourself, but below the surface, you don't understand anything."
The article then explained that the black and white photo challenge was believed to have been started following the case of a 27-year-old woman who was killed by her boyfriend in Turkey, which had since sparked the protest against the crime against women over the years - with the black and white photos representing the photos of these dead women that were published by the media.
"Some women lost their job. Some women lost an eye. Some women lost their lives. And do you say anything when they were assaulted and exploited?" The article continued, referring to the women involved in the Hong Kong protests.
Denise, who shared the article on her own social media account, and sarcastically captioned it, "We want women empowerment! (But only when it is convenient for us.) "
It is noted that many female celebrities in Hong Kong joined the said challenge by posting a black and white photo of themselves and adding hashtags like "women empowerment" and "women supporting women". Among them include singers Sammi Cheng, Charlene Choi, Stephy Tang, as well as actresses Sisley Choi and Gigi Leung.
