‘The Defenders’: S.J. Clarkson Returning To Marvel Universe To Direct Netflix Series

S.J. Clarkson, who directed the first two episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones for Netflix last year, is returning to the streaming superhero fray. She is set to helm Episodes 1 and 2 of The Defenders, which Netflix is set to premiere next year. She also will serve as EP on the first of the show’s eight episodes.

Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios, the superpowered ensemble series follows Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) — a quartet of singular heroes with one common goal: to save New York City. The four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges, realize they just might be stronger when teamed together.

Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie are executive producers along with Drew Goddard, Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory.

“S.J.’s take on the material is outstanding,” Loeb said. “We loved her work on Marvel’s Jessica Jones and couldn’t think of a more talented and accomplished person to helm the first two episodes of Marvel’s The Defenders.”

Clarkson, whose recent TV helming credits also include episodes of Vinyl, Dig and Orange Is the New Black, is repped by WME and Curtis Brown.
