Chances are, you have never thought twice about the way you write the letter “X” – and that would make you just like the rest of us.

However, a viral Twitter thread has proved it is a lot more complicated than previously thought – with as many as eight different ways to write the character out.

Twitter user @SMASEY, who identifies as an “artist/butcher” and comes from Philadelphia in the US, according to her bio, sparked a discussion on how to draw the 24th letter of the alphabet.

She shared a diagram which details up to eight different ways of putting an “X” on the page.

The tweet has since gone viral, receiving tens of thousands of retweets, likes and comments. Some were shocked that anyone would do it differently to themselves.

Others tested out the theory for themselves, proving there really is a lot of variation in how people write this letter.

Later on in the thread, @SMASEY suggests there may be a regional difference in how we write X’s – with Americans and Brits doing it differently.

Last month, actor Stephen Mangan’s tweet about what to call the end slice of a loaf of bread went viral.

From the knobby to the doormat to the butt to the heel, social media users got into a heated debate on what to call this piece of the loaf.
