David Goyer Updates On The Sandman Movie

It’s barely five months before Warner Bros’ plans for a DC Cinematic Universe to rival that of Marvel really get into gear with the release of the long-awaited (and, if rumours are to be believed, massively over-budget) ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.’

However, it’s worth bearing in mind that in a somewhat quieter corner of the DC universe, another long-awaited movie is slowly coming to life: the big screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Sandman’ series.

- Robert Rodriguez To Direct Battle Angel Alita

A movie based on Gaiman’s Gothic fantasy, published under DC’s mature readers imprint Vertigo. was first announced not long after ‘Batman V Superman’ went into production, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached to direct - and, although this is not confirmed, assumed to be taking the lead role of Morpheus, lord of dreams.

However, not a great deal has been heard about the film since - but now, talking to Collider, producer David Goyer has shed a little light on where things stand on ‘The Sandman’ at present.

One thing that comes up right away is that, although initially set-up at Warner Bros, the film has since moved over to Warners subsidiary New Line Cinema.

Goyer explains, “We’re just about to do a new draft [of the screenplay]. All of the Vertigo properties ported over to New Line a few months ago. There was a decision from the higher-ups that New Line would focus on the Vertigo properties and Warner Bros would focus on the DC properties.

“So we’re just starting a re-write with a really fantastic writer that fans of your site will enjoy that’s coming aboard, but I can’t quite announce it yet.

“I think that the Vertigo properties are a bit more quirky and off-center than kind of the mainstream superhero stuff at Warners. But I understand the decision because we’re not having to fight for release dates with the Vertigo stuff like we would have been having to do over at Warner Bros.

“But I feel confident that film will go into production hopefully next year.”

No release date has been set for ‘The Sandman.’
