Danielle Brooks is grateful for designers like Christian Siriano who create clothes for all shapes and sizes.
The Orange Is the New Black actress, who is currently pregnant with her first child, showed off her baby bump in public for the first time at the show’s final season premiere in July, when she wore an oversized hat by Sarah Sokol Millinery and a custom silver sequined tuxedo jacket and gown by Siriano.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brooks praised the American designer for creating pieces that feel comfortable and fit well.
"I'm just grateful for people like Christian Siriano, who I can call and say, 'Hey, I really want to feel like a million bucks at my last premiere for Orange Is the New Black. Can you help me out?'” she said. "He's smart enough to find the material to make sure that I'm comfortable and make sure that everything fits like a glove. And I appreciate his ear, the fact that he listens.”
She insisted that most designers claim to cater to a range of consumers, but in reality, they don’t.
"As a consumer, it feels like people in this industry are acting as if they hear you as a consumer, but they really don't. They act as if they're listening to what we want, and I don't really feel like they 100 per cent do,” the 30-year-old continued.
Brooks has struggled to find flattering maternity clothing that shows off her changing figure, and so she has collaborated with size-inclusive brand Universal Standard to develop a maternity line named Fit Liberty (Mom) which includes pieces like maxi dresses, sweater dresses, jumpsuits, and tunics.
The star believes the capsule is all about "taking away anxiety out of the equation when it comes to looking for clothes."
